Wetherlam is one of the lesser visited of the Wainwright's in the Lake District and one of the most heavily industrialised. Although the majority of copper mines and slate quarries that litter it have lain silent for nearly a century. Many now being scheduled ancient monuments. Some mine shafts in the area are reputed to be 700ft deep. As always you can find the a selection of pictures from the walk in my Facebook albums.
Walks like this really help put things in perspective. The walk/scramble is exhilarating and the scenery stunning. I love wild and remote places. Which are increasingly hard to find in the crowded and hectic world in which we live. Yet strangely enough the most serene places of all were the old quarries I visited along the way. Peaceful places of contemplation among the ruins of a long forgotten industry. A reminder of man's transience. One wonders what stories they could tell...
